ABOUT US

Cambridge University Chinese Society, CUCS, is the oldest and most well-established Hong Kong student-run society at the University of Cambridge. Founded by a group of enthusiastic and visionary students in the 1950s, CUCS began promoting Chinese cultural values and thinking through organising events such as a variety show, hosting formal dinners, and various career, recreational and sporting events within the Chinese community. CUCS is also the main student body responsible for student welfare and career advancement for Cambridge students from Hong Kong, organising various freshers events and cooperating with companies looking to expand their recruitment to one of the top universities in the UK. Currently with over 1000 lifetime members, CUCS is faced with the task of uniting such a diverse community, whilst promoting Hong Kong’s unique heritage and culture.

Although the member base was relatively small and diverse in the beginning, through organising a variety of events, ranging from lively debates to festive dinners, our fascinating culture was introduced to students of all races and nationalities whilst demonstrating strongly the spirit of unity amongst our fellow members. From the 1980s onwards, the number of Chinese students studying in Cambridge expanded exponentially, courtesy of increasingly favourable economic and political circumstances in both Hong Kong and China. The consequent surge in membership numbers, coupled with the growing understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture throughout the world, propelled a shift in the primary emphasis of the Society towards the welfare of its members.

The University of Cambridge boasts many distinguished alumni, including Mrs. Carrie Lam, our current Chief Executive of the HKSAR, the Honorary Dr. Li Kwok Po GBS JP, Chairman and Chief Executive of Bank of East Asia, and Wong Yan Lung, the former Secretary of Justice of Hong Kong. CUCS aims to build on this strong foundation and maintain a close alumni network, collaborating with The Friends of Cambridge University in Hong Kong and The Oxford and Cambridge Society of Hong Kong to organise alumni networking events and career workshops.

Strengthened with our past and equipped with a clear vision, the 2019-2020 Executive Committee promises to continue with this grand and meaningful tradition that is CUCS.
